Here are some facts about the food pantry that we learned from Ms. Tricia.
- It was founded over 30 years ago by a teen group at Grace Lutheran Church and they discovered there was such a need to help others that they asked their pastor and church to help out. And that was the beginning of the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry.
- They serve over 400 families a month. About 12-14 families in a 2 hour time period.
- The clients can get food from all of the food groups; like protein, grains, vegetables, fruits and dairy and some sugary snacks are provided. They get to eat healthy, too.
- They fill up the red basket to the top with oils, sugary snacks, pasta and many other items. They get a whole bag full of vegetables and fruits along with items in the refrigerator and freezer section.
- Anybody can donate items to the food pantry. The students got a list of items they need most.
- There are photo charts of the food items for clients that don't speak English.
- A client can go to the food pantry 7 times a year or once month. You need to live in Glen Ellyn and all surrounding communities.
- It's free to all clients that need food that month and can't afford it.
The Growing Glen Ellyn Garden: Onto the Village Green Garden Plot
This garden was started by a 7th grade group of students for their PBL. They wanted to help people in need and provide fresh vegetables for them and they came up with an idea to grow a garden. The partnership with the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry and the Glen Ellyn Park District and the community will make this come true.
Our students are allowed to go at any time to water the garden, especially their potatoes that they planted. They know how to get the milk jugs and to fill them up with water and how to walk around the garden to water them.
